surfing off Ponta Pequena - see map |
It was not difficult
to decide to plan a world series surfing championship
event in Madeira. It was a decision made not necessarily
from the possibly traditional reasons - such as the
logistics of the surf site or its high/low spectatorship
value, but rather a decision made from the surfing
adrenaline that drove the ambitions of professionals
to contest each other on the spectacular Madeiran
waves. The type of adrenaline experienced when
the surfer tackles the luxurious three metre high
waves crashing down on the basalt bed of rocks of
the ocean floor. These "luxurious" waves
or "big riders" as it is known in
their "lingo" is very much what any good
surfer worth his weight in salt is desperately searching
for.
Below: a map showing
the three points where the World Surfing Championship
may take place. In principle much of the contest will
take place around the surfing area of Jardim do
Mar (bottom arrow).
