I would like to know if the people of Madeira have any kind of celebration on May First. Aloha from Hawaii. Tim
May 1st is a National public holiday in Portugal and therefore Madeira, important to know for bus schedules and shop/business/bank opening times, but I don't think they do anything special that day, apart from possibly some local religious feast somewhere, may be.
BUT May 3 and 4 is the Flower Festival this year!!
ON THE 1ST OF MAY, FAMILIES GATHER AND ORGANIZE PICKNICKS EVERYWHERE. IF YOU DRIVE AROUND BY CAR, YOU GET STUCK IN THE TRAFFIC. THE CARS ARE DECORATED WITH HORNS (OF COWS) AND PEOPLE SOUND THE HORN THE WHOLE DAY. WE ALSO USE NECKLACES MADE OF YELLOW FLOWERS. THE MOST VISITED PLACES ARE: ST.CATHERINE PARK, MONTADO DO PEREIRO, CHÃO DA LAGOA, CHÃO DOS LOUROS, AND SO ON. WHEN ADAM BLANDY´S MOTHER WAS STILL ALIFE, SHE USED TO OPEN THE GATE OF THE GARDEN THAT DAY , SO THAT PEOPLE COULD SPEND THE DAY IN THE BLANDY´S GARDEN.
THERE´S A PROCESSION IN FUNCHAL, DEDICATED TO THE PROTECTION SAINT OF THE TOWN, SAINT JAMES. BETWEEN 1927 AND 1974, THE PORTUGUESE DICTATORSHIP HAD FORBIDDEN THE CELEBRATING OF THE WORKER´S DAY, BUT IN FUNCHAL, PEOPLE CELEBRATED IT ANYWAY, JUSTIFYING IT WITH THE CELEBRATION OF THE SAINT.
TODAY, LEFT POLITICAL PARTIES-THE COMMUNISTS- TAKE THE OPPORTUNITY TO EXPRESS THEIR FEELINGS AND USUALLY, THERE ARE MANIFESTATIONS GOING ON.
