1933 Vinhos Justino Henriques Malmsey

edited December 1969 in Madeira Wine

I opened the 1933 VJH Malmsey tonight. This wine is commanding. From the first pour the colour is dark and dense like perfect old mahogany. The nose is full and reminds me of raw Christmas cake batter, thick dark demerare and toasted oak. The legs are long and clinging. The pallet is charged with thick overly caramelized sweetness running with crisp acidity and substantial heat of fortification. It is well integrated, very concentrated and powerfully strong. I prefer the higher acidity of Sercials or the less sweet Buals but this is still a great wine to experience.

If this wine were a woman it would be Lauren Bacall.
