Casal
São João is a modest countryside village accommodation
located atop the rustic charm of the seaside village of Fajã da
Ovelha on the deep northern end of rural Municipal Calheta, and on the
south western side of Madeira Island itself.
An old family home it has been transformed to a tourism board classified
"Turismo de Habitação" accommodation -
a type of guesthome where the owners also live on the same property. The
accommodation is simple and quaint. It is typical of the homes and interiors
of rural madeiran folk. However, there are some added amenities to enjoy
such as the jacuzzi overlooking the ocean, a useful set of gymnasium equipment,
an outside collapsible pool, table tennis, darts, and so on.
Visitors to Casal São João (which interprets roughly
as Couple Saint John) will be looking for a place to stay that
is fairly economical, restful and literally far away from it all. It is
a good hours drive to Funchal and has long winding roads through terraced
and cultivated countryside before you arrive there from either approach
along the coast of Madeira. That is, you can reach it from the direction
of Funchal or from round the other side coming from Porto Moniz. The view
across the atlantic ocean is enormous and the sun sets marvellously at
the end of long bucolic days.
