Buying and registering a car

Is it possible to buy a car on mainland Portugal and bring it to Madeira via the ferry? In order to leave it permanently in Madeira would it have to be registered there and is it a hassle/expensive to do so? Any info would be most appreciated. Thanks..

I can't see that being a problem as it's still Portugal, unless that tax's are different in Madeira compared to the mainland, which some are.
